Comparing Sign Companies

Table of Contents

Sign companies vary based on their experience, skill, resources and materials. That makes it difficult to compare sign quotes from different companies—you’re not always comparing apples to apples. So how do you know which company is providing the best signage option for your business or organization? We’ve got some tips.

To compare varying signage quotes, consider the primary features both sign companies are offering: sign material, size, attachment, and finish. Then evaluate which elements are necessary to achieve visibility based on your business location and bring your desired design to life.

1. Sign Material

There are so many sign materials available. Plus, with new technology, companies are finding new ways to make common materials into unique and dynamic signage.

Signs are often made from a combination of common sign materials:

  • Metals (aluminum, bronze, brass)
  • Plastics (PVC, acrylic, vinyl)
  • Wood
  • Foam

When comparing sign quotes, ask questions about where materials are sourced so you can get an idea of quality. Know how the company cuts and shapes their materials to understand your potential sign company’s ability to manifest your best sign from your chosen material.

2. Sign Size

Your sign size is usually specified within your city regulations, or from a property landlord. When it comes to sign lettering, size also refers to the thickness of the letters.

The thickness, or depth, of channel lettering lends to the sign’s readability and is a big factor when it comes to quality. Optimal thickness ranges from 0.25 to 2 inches for non-illuminated signs and 3 to 5 inches for illuminated signs.

3. Method of Sign Attachment

The method of sign attachment should be considered because it’s a factor in its longevity. Your sign is an investment and vital representation of your brand, so it’s important that it’s properly secured and displayed.

There are two common methods of sign attachment:

  • Tape mount: Signs are attached to the surface using a high-strength silicone tape (such as VHB™ tape) for maximum adhesion.
  • Stud mount: Threaded studs are secured to the back or top of the sign and coated with adhesive, and are then pushed into holes that are drilled into the wall.

With channel lettering, individual letters can be directly mounted onto a surface, or attached to a long rectangular box (or raceway) and then mounted onto a surface.

4. Sign Finish

A sign finish can be anything from paint, an anodized material, or stucco.  Finishes are often applied to achieve an added effect or texture, but some finishes are necessary because they add durability.

Certain sign materials, such as acrylic lettering, require painting to withstand both time and the elements. See if your quote includes an added charge for paint or a sign finish—if so, distinguish if your sign material actually needs it.

In the end, it’s important to go with a sign company that understands your goals and is ready to meet them. A good sign company offers their best technology, design, resources and expertise to meet a customer’s vision, and will work with you to meet your timeframe and budget.
